a half-century on the ball

Byron Bay’s largest sporting club is celebrating 50 years of football in Byron Shire with a gala event on August 31st. Football had humble beginnings in Byron, with games played at the Byron Youth Club from 1963 and Byron players sometimes joining Mullumbimby.

Byron Prems c1985A committee got together in 1970 and The Byron Bay Soccer Club was born.

With the establishment of its own identity, football in Byron grew quickly, and the Club soon had teams competing in grades from under 7′s to under 14′s in the fledgling Summerland Competition.

The senior side kicked off in 1978, playing in the Tweed-Byron competition – and Byron won the competition in its first year!

The Club is keen to fill in the gaps in its long and colourful history and is keen to hear from people who have been involved over the years.

Photographs of games, teams and social events are of particular interest and may be included in written history to be presented to the Byron Historical society and the local library on completion.
