When Eight Isn't Enough…

Byron's Mav White jockey for possession in the midfieldGoing into the final round of the 2013 Summer Youth League Competition against Casino, on Friday night, the SAE-Quantm Byron Bay squad looked likely to share the top spot in the pointscore with rivals Richmond Rovers. Less likely were their chances of scoring the 20 goals needed to overcome Rovers goal difference lead and retain their SYL title for a fourth consecutive year. Despite the long odds, the Byron boys came out with all guns blazing and goal within seconds of the opening whistle signalled their intent. With much of the squad pushing forward, however, the Rams let their guard down in defence and an equaliser from the young Casino squad tempered their enthusiasm. The match see-sawed from Byron attack to Casino counter attack for much of the first half and into the second, with Casino scoring another 2 goals and taking the lead at one point. The Byron squad eventually settled into to their usual disciplined attacking game and their superior skills and endurance began to tell. Sequoya Rawson Smith wore a track into the pitch on the far post channel, adding five goals to his season tally. Two goals to Sam Robson and another to Nolan Pierce took the final score to a decisive 8-3. A convincing win, but still 13 short of the Rovers impressive goal tally.

After yet another great season for Jonno Pierce's young Rams, the boys finish the season equal first on points, but cede the Summer Youth League title to Rovers on goal difference.

Congratulations to Jonno and all of the young Rams – particularly this year's debutantes – and many many thanks to our sponsors, SAE-Qantm.

See you next year!
