The journey continues for the Byron Bay FC Services Club Rams when they take on Lismore Thistles in the Preliminary Final at home this weekend.
It’s a do-or-die game with the winner to take on South Lismore in the 2019 FFNC Grand Final. The match will be played at 2pm on Sunday at the Byron Bay Memorial Recreation Grounds.
Finishing fifth on the ladder, Thistles have been the surprise packet of the finals series so far and will take it all the way to the Rams in their fourth meeting this season. The Rams are undefeated against Lismore in 2019 with two wins and one draw – including an impressive 6-0 win at home in Round 13.
But history means nothing in finals, even more so considering Thistles’ performance in the finals so far. After despatching Bangalow in the first elimination final, Thistles faced Richmond Rovers – a team they had not beaten all season – and won on penalties. The win extended their unbeaten run to four matches and have them high on confidence going into Sunday’s match.
Pointscore Champions Byron Bay lost on penalties to South Lismore in last week’s Major Semi-Final so will be keen to make to make amends in the Preliminary Final.
It will be the first time the two sides have met in finals since the drought-breaking 2013 Grand Final when Sam Owens scored a double in Byron’s 2-1 victory.
