The 2015 will be remembered for one of the Byron Bay FC’s most successful seasons yet. The Byron Club has just taken out the Football Far North Coast Club Championship and, after seeing most of its competitive teams make the finals, now has six team through to the Grand Finals in Lismore!
Byron’s Grade 12, 13 and 16 juniors, the women’s Wildcats 4th Division and, for the third year running, the men’s Premier Reserves and Premier Division teams.
The Reserve Grade won their way through to the Grand Final with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Minor Premiers, Richmond Rovers, on Friday night in Lismore. A brilliant free kick and a clinical strike from a tireless Conor Cannon was enough secure the Ressies a ticket to Oakes Oval. Rovers will now play Workers to determine Byron’s opponents for the big match.
On Saturday, the Northern Hotel Rams Premier side overcame a gutsy and determined Richmond Rovers (and a pitch invasion by a very large dog!) to lock down their Grand Final berth. A high-flying header from Rams veteran Todd Knaus put Byron on the scoreboard and a pinpoint cross from Michael Kelly, clinically finished by a hard-charging James Tomlinson, gave the Rams a valuable buffer. Rovers fought back strongly and a well taken free kick put them back in contention. Byron defended their lead down to the final whistle and the 2-1 finish gave them the fast-track the Grand Final in Lismore on September 19. Rovers must now beat new challengers, Lennox Head to secure their Grand Final spot and a replay of last year’s match.
