This years 2nd division minor premiers the Byron Bay Rams just missed out on the major premiership in a 4 3 penalty shoot out to the Lismore Workers. The game last Saturday was an extremely close affair with nothing separating the two teams in the first half.
At the beginning of the second half Lismore Workers surged and were rewarded when a deflected corner ended in the back of the net. The Rams were now a little unsettled and Lismore scored again with a good shot to the top corner from outside the box. Lismore continued to pressure and it was only some heroic saves from keeper Taama Jones that kept Byron in the game.
With 20 mins to go Byron began the fight back and were awarded a penalty when a Lismore player handled the ball in his own box. Byron scored from the penalty making it 2 1 and started piling on the pressure. Lismore defended anxiously but gave away another penalty kick when Steve Martinez was taken down in the box. The kick was calmly converted and so it would be 2 2 at full time.
Both sides had some close chances in the 20 minutes of extra time but neither side was able to put them away. The ensuing penalty shoot out ended 4 3 and Lismore took the premiership.
Congratulations to the minor premiers and best of luck next season.
