The final game of the 2012 FFNC Summer Youth League was, as expected, a hard-fought battle to the finish. While the trophy was already in Byron hands, second placed Rovers were not going to go down quietly.
An early penalty gave the young Rams a 1-0 lead, but a solid Rovers defence, outstanding goalkeeping and some quick counter attacks soon had Byron battling to stay in the game.
The Lismore defenders held off repeated Byron strikes and managed to extend their lead to 3-1 with long and swift retaliatory strikes.
Throughout the series, the Byron Boys have been strong finishers and have come from behind on a couple of occasions. This time, however, the Rovers' defense was just too strong.
The Byron attack could not find the net as the Lismore back-line dug in and their keeper pulled off some extraordinary saves.
Byron did, finally, claw back 2 more goals but it was too little, too late and Rovers ended the Ram's undefeated run with a well earned 4-3 win.
As promised, it was an exciting and entertaining game.
Full credit to Rovers for a herculean effort and congratulations to Jonno and the young Rams for their second consecutive FFNC Summer Youth League Championship.
