On Saturday, May 4, the Byron Bay Rams traveled to Alstonville for Round 5 of the FFNC Premier Division competition. With 2 wins and a loss apiece, Alstonvile and Byron went into the round on equal points.
The Reserve squad opened proceedings with great confidence after a faultless start to the season. The Astonville Reserves had different ideas, however and the Rams fluent style was countered by the the young and enthusiastic Villa squad. By half time, the Rams were down 3-0. Nolan Pierce put Byron on the scoreboard, but Alstonville were in full flight in the second half and another three goals took the final score to 6-1. Best for the Rams Reserves were Nolan Pierce and the evergreen Bruce Mourhaus.
The reserves' defeat sounded a warning to the Byron top squad and it looked as though history may repeat itself with Alstonville scoring just 3 minutes in.
The Rams rallied and with Sebastian Bell and Mauro Michi up front and the Byron midfield in control, Alstonville began to falter. At the 35th minute a great exchange of passes by the Rams brought the equaliser from Sebastian Bell. The teams carried their short passing game into the second half, with both trying desperately to penetrate the opposition defence. The Rams missed a number of opportunities and, with 15 minutes on the clock, Alstonville scored a well worked goal. The Rams were stung back into action. Led from the back by Lucas O'Donnell and, with Nolan Piece and Sam Owens joining the fray, it looked as if the Rams may be able salvage something from the game. Nolan Pierce scored a fine goal from a one-on-one with the Villa keeper and, with less than 7 minutes to run, Sam Owens beat the Alstonville defence and cut a great ball back to Sebastian Bell who drove home a wonderful third goal.
A tough and rewarding win for the Byron squad. Rams' man-of-the-match was Lucas O'Donnel with the rest of the team close behind.
