Byron Bay Rams played host to Lismore's Italo Stars at the Byron Recreation Grounds on Saturday.
The Rams' Reserve squad set the tone for the afternoon with a decisive 5-2 victory. The Byron side played fast, free flowing and entertaining football and were 2-0 up by the break. The second half saw another three goals to Byron while the Stars clawed back two. James Tomlinson and keeper Peter Sladden were the Rams standouts, with strong performances from the entire team. Goal scorers for the Rams were Layton Barton 2, Tom Cranmer 1, Steve Kirkpatrick 1 and a scrambling own goal.
With Italo struggling at the bottom of the Premiership table, the Rams went into the round confident but far from complacent and from the kickoff it was clear that the Rams were there to play.
Byron totally dominated the first half with crisp passing, a relentless attack and rock solid defence. By half time, the Rams were in front by 7 goals to 1. After the break, a stoic Italo squad did their best to keep play in the Byron half, with their backs planting themselves firmly on the halfway line. Despite their best efforts, however, the Rams managed to score 3 more to take the final score to 10-1.
Goal scorers for the Rams were Sam Owens 4, Seb Bell 3, Layton Barton 2 and one to new signing Mauro Michi. It was a solid display of football from the Byron squad with all players sharp and on their game.
Todd knaus was named Man of the match with Sam Owens, Layton Barton and Sebastian Bell all in fine form.
With three wins from four matches so far, the Rams are locked in a tight four-way battle for the top of the table and take on enthusiastic rivals Bangalow at the Rec Ground on Friday night.
The Byron/Bangalow derby is always a 'spirited' clash so don't miss out!
Reserves kick off at 6pm and the Prems at 8pm.
See you there!
