Byron Bay's SAE-Quantum Rams took on a very young and very determined Lennox Head squad last Friday night. The Lennox boy were stinging after a taking a hiding from Thistles and Alstonville in earlier rounds, and were determined not to let the reigning champions have it all their way. The Byron boys began with their usual spirited game, but the Lennox squad were having none of it. They played fast and disruptive football that prevented the Rams attack getting into any kind of rhythm.
They doubled up in almost every tackle and made up for any lack of experience with sheer enthusiasm and drive.
The first half was very hard graft for Byron and, despite many attacking moves, only a single goal from Sam Robson took them into the break one goal up.
The second half looked like being more of the same with Lennox strong on the counter and forcing some spectacular saves from Byron Keeper, Lachie Baynes.
Ten minutes in to the second session, the Rams shifted up a gear and poured on the pressure. The pace of first half was unsustainable and the young legs of the Lennox lads finally began to give.
Two goals from Sequoya Rawson Smith and another from Sam Robson took the final score to 4-1.
Perhaps not the best result for Byron, with goal difference potentially deciding the Championship, but certainly no disgrace for either squad – particularly the valiant young Lennox boys.
This week sees Byron with a bye and plenty of time to prepare for the Friday 15th Lismore clash with undefeated Rovers.
Rovers are 3 points ahead of field and it could well be a "do-or-die" match for the Rams.
