Byron Ram's campaign for the FFNC Premiers and Reserves competition Finals began with mixed results in the first round of Semis last weekend. The reserves opened proceedings on Friday night with a sweet and solid victory over second place opponents Alstonville.
The highlight of game was the invasion of the pitch by two young lads who sought to express their appreciation for Byron's dominance with consecutive streaks right across the field in front of the goal … but not many people seemed to notice.
Solid defence Lachlan Baynes 'safe hands' kept Alstonville scoreless. 20 minutes in, Steve Kirkpatrick took a well-aimed shot from the 18 and BB were 1-0 up. Other chances followed with Sequoya Rawson Smith, Jono Pierce, Herick Schuenemann and George Martin all in the mix.
Byron played with 10 men for much of the second half after Ian Lennie was given a red card. Byron rallied with Yantra Whitling, Farren Leatham and Brad Jones marshalling the defence and midfielders falling back to defend. Herick and Jono worked tirelessly in midfield although Jono’s efforts earned him his first yellow of the season. The Rams had a few more chances. Nolan Pierce clashed with the keeper in the closing minutes but the score remained 1-0.
A “gritty” win, not always stylish, but effective. Byron will now meet Thistles in the preliminary final.
