The Byron Bay Wildcats girls got the ball rolling with a spirited challenge against competition favourites, Bangalow. Despite going down 5-1, the Byron girls got the chance to mix it up with some of the region’s best Premier League players and turned on some heroic performances.

It was a terrific display of sportsmanship from both sides with huge smiles all round at the full-time whistle.

The young SAE Rams boys turned in an equally impressive performance, dominating a Prems-studded Bangalow team from the outset. A penalty gave the Bluedogs an early lead, but a series of fast-paced attacks culminated in an equaliser from Sam Shepherd that took the match into the break at 1-1.

Bangalow fought back hard in the second session, putting sustained pressure on the Rams defence in the opening minutes. Byron weathered the storm and regained the upper hand midway through the second half with wave after wave of runs on the Bangalow goal. Young Ethan Archer finally broke the deadlock – pouncing on the ball in a goalmouth skirmish and finishing with a well placed tap.

This Friday, the Rams and Wildcats travel to Casino for round two of the Championship. The girls kick off at 6.30pm and the boys at 8pm.
